This year the Asian Student Union will be hosting its 3rd Annual Asian Heritage Celebration Dinner. The dinner is a way of celebrating and honoring the heritage of IUPUI’s Asian-Pacific American Community. By honoring the Asian-Pacific American (APA) community, we are charging onwards with this important tradition of building stronger community partnerships and networks.
The mission behind this year’s dinner is to challenge ourselves to become better leaders and neighbors to our community by introducing this year’s theme of “Empower Yourself to Empower Others”. Our hope for the event is to foster a greater sense of identity, unity, and positive action within the growing Asian community at IUPUI by engaging student leaders to empower themselves to empower others.
The keynote speaker this year is Maria D. Beltran-Figueroa. Maria is an activist and avid advocate for social change. Her early start in human rights work and advocacy started in her native Philippines during the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos. She worked for an NGO documenting cases of human rights abuses. She currently runs Refugee Resource in Indianapolis. Maria has a graduate degree in Peace Studies and Conflict Management from the European Center for Peace University in Stadtschlaining, Austria.
