          About This Event

          Summary

          From Academy Award-nominated director Richard E. Robbins, Girl Rising spotlights the unforgettable stories of nine girls living in the developing world and overcoming nearly insurmountable odds to achieve their dreams. The film gives voice to the girls’ stories and this powerful truth: educating girls can transform families, communities, countries and eventually, the world.

           

          Following the film, we will have a panel discussion with campus experts in global health, international education and philanthropy. Our panelists are:

           

          Angela Bies, PhD

          Dr. Bies is the Director of International Programs and Associate Professor of Philanthropic Studies in the IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Her work in the context of international development and international exchange is extensive, including senior leadership with the American Field Service, various consulting projects in Africa, Central Europe, Pakistan, and elsewhere, as well as service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Kenya.

           

          Sarah Stelzner, MD

          Dr. Stelzner is Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics for Indiana University School of Medicine. She directs the child advocacy rotation for second-year residents, organizes a yearly multidisciplinary health education project in Calnali, Mexico, and serves a rapidly growing Hispanic community at Eskenazi Health Center.

           

          Rachel Vreeman, MD, MS

          Dr. Vreeman is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine and a member of the Riley Children¹s Health Services Research Program.  In addition, she is Co-Director of Pediatric Research for the Academic Model for the Prevention and Treatment of HIV/AIDS (AMPATH), an academic collaboration that provides comprehensive HIV treatment for over 70,000 patients in Kenya.

           

          Dawn Whitehead, PhD

          Dr. Whitehead is the Director of Curriculum Internationalization in the IUPUI Office of International Affairs. Dr. Whitehead’s outstanding leadership in domestic and international education has led to her involvement with numerous IUPUI global institutional partners on curricular initiatives with places such as Mexico, Kenya, Ghana, and Indonesia. Dr. Whitehead also teaches an International Studies Course and Global Dialogues course at IUPUI.
