On any given night, there are as many as 500 homeless veterans in Marion County, and this number is increasing. For a number of reasons, including multiple and sustained tours of duty, Iraq and Afghanistan veterans are becoming homeless much more quickly than previous generations.
Last year when two students from SPEA’s Public Affairs Student Association (PASA) started a food and clothing drive with only a few boxes to help the Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation, more than 750 items were collected.
This year’s drive already seems promising, as more than 15 IUPUI organizations and other community businesses have joined PASA in the efforts. So far, the IU McKinney School of Law, Public Policy Institute, IU Medical School, University Library, Bepko Learning Center, Wishard, IUPUI Student Veterans, Philanthropic Studies Society and many more are participating to collect items for the vets as winter approaches.
Now through November 16, donate:
Self-opening canned meat (tuna, chicken, SPAM, etc.)
Warm clothing (long johns, gloves, coats, hats, etc.)
Macaroni & Cheese
Pasta and sauce
Canned chili mac or beef stew
Pork / baked beans
SPEA has collection boxes located on the second floor (orange space), third floor (SPEA staff office lobby) and fourth floor (outside secretary's office).
Boxes are also located with these collaborating organizations:
American Legion Student Post 360
Bepko Learning Center
Elmore's Firearms & Accessories (520 N. State Road 135, Suite I, Greenwood)
