          About This Event

          Summary

The Office of Research in Medical Education is sponsoring a series of monthly luncheon workshops during the 2012-2013 academic year. These workshops are held the third Tuesday of each month from noon to 1 p.m.

The next workshop is Tuesday, March 19, in the VanNuys Medical Science Building, Room B11.  Margaret Gaffney, M.D., associate professor of clinical medicine at the IU School of Medicine and Ann Cottingham will present “Threading Ethics through Basic Science.”

They will share their experience weaving bioethical learning experiences into basic science course content using clinical cases and Team-Based Learning methods and discuss how the integration helped students understand ethics as a key part of their professional lives. They will also share their experience publishing the learning experiences in MedEd Portal.

Margaret Gaffney, associate clinical professor of medicine and a practicing dermatologist, is director of the Introduction to Clinical Medicine Course I and of the Moral Reasoning and Ethical Judgment competency in the revised curriculum of the IU School of Medicine. She also serves as a faculty member at the IU Center for Bioethics, chair of the Wishard Ethics Committee, a member of the IU Health ethics committee and a collaborator on the IU Conscience Project.

Ann Cottingham is the director of the Dean’s Office for Research in Medical Education. She has worked in the field of medical education and research for over ten years developing, evaluating and describing innovative undergraduate, graduate and faculty level learning experiences and assessments. Areas of focus include clinical ethics, professionalism, physician/patient relationships and advanced illness communication.

The goals of the RIME workshops are to share best practices, learn through collegial exchange and turn educational ideas into curricular innovations and scholarly, research and dissemination products.

Lunch is provided. Space is limited and you must RSVP if you plan to attend.
