Tormenti Film Disegnato (Torment - Designed Film) During Rome of the 1930s, full of nationalistic fanfare, the young laundress Eleonora Ciancarelli, known as Lolli, meets at a party the affable, middle-aged attorney and supporter of the Fascist regime Rinaldo Maria Bonci Paonazzi. A stormy relationship begins between the two in which Lolli becomes the victim of the passions and tempestuous behavior of Rinaldo. At least until she meets Mario Marchetti, a young student dedicated to boxing and the anti-fascist cause, who immediately falls in love with her. The two develop a secret relationship that causes Rinaldo to lose his wits for beautiful girl. Tormenti is “designed" on a series of art boards sketched by and a script written by Furio Scarpelli, one of the greatest scriptwriters of Italian cinema and cartoonist for satirical newspapers during the war years. The film is an illustrated homage to the popular films written for directors Mario Monicelli and Pietro Germi, and is an "historical graphic-novel" animated by the voices of well-known Italian actors Alba Rohrwacher, Luca Zingaretti, Valerio Mastandrea and Elio Pandolfi. The film was directed by Filiberto Scarpelli, who moves inside and between the static designs of his uncle Fulvio to tell the story of a love triangle that begins in Fascist Rome and ends in Franco’s Spain.
