Title: TRANSITIONING FROM ICD-9-CM TO ICD-10-CM/PCS IN AN ACUTE INPATIENT HOSPITAL SETTING: AN INVESTIGATION OF POTENTIAL IMPLEMENTATION CHALLENGES AND SOLUTION
The United States is the last industrialized nation yet to implement ICD-10. CMS has set October 1, 2014 as the compliance date of transition from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM/PCS. This research project serves as a gap analysis by documenting the challenges and solutions of that transition in the acute inpatient hospital setting of IU Health in Indianapolis, IN., in order to identify, through research, challenges and solutions that have been overlooked. Ultimately this report would serve as a guide to other inpatient hospitals. The main challenges are related to training, mapping, reimbursement, productivity and accuracy, data analysis and trending, and documentation. Overall solutions for any inpatient hospital, particularly health informatics related, is to implement the following: a master data management approach for easing crosswalk variations amongst mapping in IT systems, computer assisted coding to improve productivity and accuracy, computer assisted terminology mapping software to reduce errors in data analysis and trending, and clinical documentation improvement technology to provide physicians point-of-care documentation improvement suggestions.
