SPIRIT & PLACE FESTIVAL'S OPENING NIGHT EVENT!

One energizing night ... One $20,000 award ... Four innovators ... Four projects about race in Central Indiana.

Race … it’s a pint-sized word that powerfully shapes how we see ourselves, each other, and our community. Cast your vote when four innovators--chosen from 43 applicants--vie for a $20,000 award to implement their daring idea for reshaping notions of race in Central Indiana.

FINALISTS (alpha order): Javier Barrera – Latino Youth Collective (Project Title: Race: A Look Inside), Pete Hylton – IUPUI School of Engineering & Technology, Motorsports Engineering Program (Project Title: A Competition About Race Using Racing), Danicia Malone – Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center (Project Title: The Lost Race), DeShong Perry-Smitherman – A Girl’s Gift, Inc. (Project Title: My Mentor, My Self).

Winner will be selected by a combination of audience and judge votes. Judges include: Gloria Berlanga King, Director of Multicultural Affairs, Wishard Health Services; Hope Hampton, Director of Community Relations, Christian Theological Seminary; Erin Kelley, Program Designer; Felipe Martinez (chair/moderator), Associate Executive Presbyter, Whitewater Valley Presbytery; Toby Miller, Director, Race and Cultural Relations Leadership Network, a standing committee of the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee; Helen Sanematsu, Assistant Professor, Visual Communication Design, Herron School of Art & Design, IUPUI; William Taft, Executive Director, Local Initiatives Service Corporation.

With this event, Spirit & Place is doing what it does best—creating space for creativity and conversation, trusting in the talent and capacity of our own citizens to build community, and providing a platform on which, together, we can dare to imagine a better life.
