Sabbatical Speaker Series: Material Witness: Memory, Heritage, and California Mission Landscapes

NOTE: In the event of inclement weather the afternoon of February 9, please check the Liberal Arts web site for any cancellation or re-scheduling of this event.

Elizabeth Kryder-Reid, Associate Professor, Museum Studies and Anthropology What could be more beautiful than the vivid colors of a California mission garden, more charming than a fourth graderand#39;s meticulously crafted mission model, or quainter than a hard-tinted postcard of a monk working his garden? Beneath this innocuous veneer, however, lies a complicated story of how the past is remembered. This talk will peel back some of the layers to explore how these sites came to be such iconic landmarks of California history and embedded in cultural memory.

Budgeting Workshop

	Budgeting Your Money Is Possible!

We all have a limited amount of money, regardless of the amounts, and we all have to make decisions about what we should buy now, what we should wait to buy, and what we can actually do without. If we donandrsquo;t know where our money is going, we lose the opportunity to spend our money on the things that matter most to us. Creating a budget allows you to actually set money aside to make your dream a reality!

Student Financial Services is offering a budgeting workshop designed to encourage students to track their expenses, consider their wants and needs, recognize that money management is about making wise choices, and practice living within their budgets. This one-hour workshop will repeat four times throughout the day on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 in CE 305.

WORKSHOP Encuentro Indianapolis

As part of their contribution to the "Collaborate" exhibition, the sound art collective Ultra-red will present a three-session practice-based workshop on activism and sound art open to students, artists, musicians, researchers, activists and organizers. Facilitated by Ultra-red co-founder Dont Rhine, the workshop introduces participants to the art of sound and learning from what we hear in the methods and politics of community organizing.

Workshop sessions will include a walking tour and analytical listening, field recording, and investigations into the crucial concepts of political process, participation and political action.

Given the accumulative nature of the workshop, participants are encouraged to attend all three sessions. Participants should be prepared to listen intensively as they conduct site visits in the area. Bring your experiences, open minds, open ears and an eagerness to collaborate. Equipment, materials and meals will be provided.

Reading at the Table: Glazed America: The History of the Doughnut

Paul Mullins turns his attention to the simple doughnut in order to learn more about North American culture and society. Both a breakfast staple and a snack to eat any time of day or night, doughnuts cross lines of gender, class, and race like no other food item. Favorite doughnut shops that were once neighborhood institutions remain unchanged--even as their surrounding neighborhoods have morphed into strip clubs, empty lots, and abandoned housing. Blending solid scholarship with humorous insights, Mullins offers a look into doughnut production, marketing, and consumption. He confronts head-on the question of why we often paint doughnuts in moral terms, and shows how the seemingly simple food reveals deep and complex social conflicts over body image and class structure.
